One-Time Opportunity Category: Children and Youth
As a YCL volunteer, you’ll be supporting an educator or organization staff who’s coaching a Youth Coding League team.
You don’t need to know how to code. Being a positive, supportive person who admires the coders projects and helps them stay on task and follow along with their daily sprint checklists are what you’ll be spending most of your time doing.
The regular season is made up of 8 activities (we call them Sprints) in Google’s CS First curriculum, spread out over 9 weeks. Coders watch a video that provides instruction on a computer science or coding concept, and then apply that skill on a project they build out in Scratch. Coders can earn up to 80 points/sprint, and they are clued in to these point-gathering opportunities on the sprint checklists they work off of each day. Coders can complete epics to sharpen their skills and earn badges, and primarily work individually in a very structured way in the regular season. Coder profiles + team stats are updated each Friday at YouthCodingLeague.com.
This is a once/week volunteer opportunity that runs from early September –> the end of October. Volunteers are asked to commit to the duration of the regular season.
The following Boys & Girls Club units have asked for volunteer support for the Fall ’22 season, that kicks off September 5 and runs each week through the week of October 31:
Fremont, Musgrave, Stalknaker, Henderson, Sertoma, O’Reilly, McGregor, and a Teen Program team.
Volunteers will receive training, and will need to review the Boys & Girls Clubs volunteer requirements and policies and undergo a background check.
