In November 1965, Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation (OACAC) was organized as a non-profit agency designed to work toward alleviating the causes and conditions of poverty in Southwest Missouri. Today, OACAC serves the low-income population in ten counties, including Barry, Christian, Dade, Dallas, Greene, Lawrence, Polk, Stone, Taney and Webster. As a Community Action Agency, OACAC works to better focus available local, state, private, and federal resources to assist low-income individuals and families to acquire useful skills and knowledge, gain access to new opportunities and achieve economic self-sufficiency. OACAC carries out its mission through a variety of means including mobilization of financial and non-financial resources, community-wide assessments of needs and strengths, advocacy on behalf of low-income people, comprehensive antipoverty plans and strategies, partnerships with diverse community-based organizations to eliminate poverty, and provision of a broad range of direct services.
