SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – The Humane Society of Southwest Missouri launched a last-minute push for donations on Giving Tuesday as the shelter faces one of its busiest years in recent memory.
The shelter received about $10,000 in donations by Tuesday afternoon. The board of directors continues to match donations until $15,000 is reached, though officials hope to exceed that goal.
The shelter spends approximately $300 to care for one animal during an average stay. This year has brought increased challenges as economic conditions affect pet ownership.
“Donations are down, adoptions are down, unfortunately, when the economy is down, a lot of times the first thing to go is a pet,” said McKenzie Palmer of the Southwest Missouri Humane Society. “So we’ve definitely been seeing an increase in surrenders. We are definitely in need and would be grateful for any donations of any sort.”
Adoption event continues
People can donate money or supplies through the Humane Society’s website. The shelter also encourages adoptions during an ongoing special event.
The Bissell Pet Foundation sponsors the shelter’s “Empty the Shelter” event, allowing adoptions of dogs or cats six months and older for $25. The event runs through Dec. 15.
