SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) -The city of Springfield’s cleanup and beautification initiative is back with a focus on preparing the city for the National Route 66 Centennial Kickoff Celebration.
In preparation for the celebrations, the city asked for community volunteers to help clean litter along the section of Route 66 that passes through Springfield, between Glenstone Avenue and Chestnut Expressway, coined the ‘Mother Road Refresh’.
Hosted by Clean Green Springfield, city staff also passed out trash bags, safety vests, and other supplies to those who helped out.
Kristen Milam, senior communication coordinator with the city of Springfield, explained how volunteer efforts and city workers are preparing together for the celebrations.
“We’ve got a lot of volunteer efforts going on right now, picking up trash and plantings and doing beautification projects. But we’ve also got a lot of extra city crews out and other community crews doing power washing, hanging street banners, and other things in order to make our community beautiful for the centennial,” said Milam.
