3 Reviews on “Harmony House”
I volunteer in the donations area of Harmony House once a week. I help sort out donated clothes and household goods to determine those that are most needed. I also help the residents find items they need. For example, some arrive with only the clothes on their backs and their children’s backs… we fine what they need to get them started. Some need clothing and shoes to help them find a new job. When ready to go back out on their own we help supply the residents with kitchen, bathroom and bedroom items to make them comfortable.
I have met friends while volunteering. The staff is always supportive and encouraging. We laugh. We cry. I feel blessed to help at Harmony House.
It is rewarding to be able to give comfort if only in a small way. There is an enormous need in our area to support victims of domestic violence.
For the past year and a half, I have volunteered every other week in the kitchen, making and serving lunch for the residents. I also help clean and prep for future meals, and will work at off-site fundraising opportunities, too. I enjoy helping in whatever way I can when I am there. Everyone of the kitchen staff is warm and welcoming, we have a great time! They provide delicious meals, often coming up with new recipes to provide good nutrition, also. I have made many friends while volunteering, from the staff to the other volunteers. I plan on volunteering as long and as often as I can!
I have been volunteering at Harmony House in the donations area for one year. I volunteer once a week. It has been one of the greatest joys of my life. When a resident comes to our area, it is evident just by looking into their eyes that they are scared and not sure what the next few weeks will hold for them and possibly their children. We all work together to provide clothing, personal items, and anything they need to feel safe and respected. We also try to present positivity and acknowledge their feelings and assure them that they are safe and wanted with us. When they are ready, we also provide household items to help them assimilate back into safe independent living. I have made wonderful friendships here, both employees and other volunteers, that I know will last a lifetime. We support each other through shared laughter and tears! I know our goal is to support and encourage our residents, but sometimes I think I feel just as blessed and encouraged as they do.
